Near the Sea

It has been a little bit since I was here. Sometimes life gets in the way. I really love this weeks sketch at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge . The moment I saw it, I knew what paper I wanted to use. The challenge for me,was to see if I could find any bits and pieces left over to be able to pull it off.

Well, I did, but I want you to know it was tough. I love the Tommy paper pack from Close To My Heart  (now retired) so much I purchased several pkgs at the time. I am glad I did as I have used it many, many times for all kinds of occasions .

I don't think I can squeeze another card out of this paper. I did however get this one put together. I hope you like it, and I hope you make good use of all your little bits and pieces. Have a great crafting week !

Blossom

Well, it is April and spring is officially here. There is still a lot of snow on the ground, and it sure looks like it is still winter, but today I smelled the change in the air, and I think we are finally on the right track for some blossoms in the not too distant future. There are sure to be lots of birds chirping and flowers blooming over at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge this week.
I love being on the design team for AHSC. There are always such interesting sketches to work from, and the ladies come up with so many ideas!!

Here is this weeks sketch # 103

I changed it up a usual. Never could follow the crowd..............LOL

Oh my gosh, I just have to say, that the new Blossom paper pack from the spring and summer Seasonal Expressions just released at the first of this month, is one of my favorites!! Close To My Heart has out done themselves this time. This paper pack is so springy and colorful. I have used most of it up already, and need to order more. I actually had to use up "bits and pieces" to pull this card together.
The stamp set is April's Stamp Of The Month ,also from Close to My Heart. This darling stamp set has so many little sayings to use with the antique typewriter, there is sure to be something to fit everyone you need to make a card for!
I made this card for someone special, and I am sure it will bring back fond memories of our high school days, when we actually used on of these old relics.

Sketch# 101

This weeks sketch at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge is a lovely sketch .My first thoughts were of all the different flowers I could make and use. I then decided that I wanted to do something really different so that crafters who play along with us can see that the sketch does not have to be taken literally.

Even though I did not use flowers, the elements of the design are there. My main feature is in the bottom right hand side of my card. I have used a sentiment,though mine is slightly higher and off center. There is bling in the upper left corner , though I used 3 instead of two. The main body of the card is a little to the left. I also did this, but choose to use a strip of coordinating color to off set the print paper I used.

As you can see, the overall card does not look like the sketch , but all the elements are there. I do hope that this gives those of you who struggle with some of the sketches some ideas on how to pull a card together that showcases your work, while following a design. 
As usual, I have tried to use up left over paper . This is an older paper pack from Close To My Heart called Tommy. I am sad to think it will soon be all gone. Was for sure, one of my favorites. Lets Celebrate !!

It is time to celebrate ! Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge has reached it's 100th sketch. How awesome it that. I have made this weeks challenge in honour of the occasion. As always ,the sketches done by the ladies on the design team are fantastic, and this week is no exception.

I choose to make my card in a portrait orientation, as opposed to the landscape one that was done here. I just like to change things up a bit.

I really like to go through all my bits and pieces and find something I can use, before I cut new paper. I try to keep my new paper packs for workshops and classes, and use the scraps for cards. This paper is an older paper from Close To My Heart . It is called Lollydoodle , and I  used it a lot. It was very versatile as are all of the papers from CTMH. I used Pair card stock to mount it on, and to make the flower. The flowers were cut from the Art Philosophy Cartridge also from CTMH. I inked the scalloped oval with Pear, and finished it off with some bling. The sentiment is an older wooden stamp I own. I have long forgotten from whence it came. Little Doggy

Wow, sketch# 99 for Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge. It is hard to believe that we are soon coming up on sketch #100. Seems like just yesterday that we were just getting started. 
Well, for anyone who has followed my blog, you know that my first love is flowers and lace and frilly things, so this weeks card is way out there me.
Here is this weeks sketch

I had so much fun with this sketch. A good friend asked me to make a card for her grand daughter who was turning 3. Her birthday theme is going to be dogs. What goes together better than little girls and puppies, unless it is little girls , puppies, and pink.

This was so quick and simple. I went on Design Space,poked in puppies and found the dog, the dog house and the bones. How could I go wrong. !! I will say I am getting lazy though, I did not even take the time to see what cart the images came from. I just choose 'em and cut 'em !!. I love my Explore and I love the Design Space. Along with all the images I have linked , and the subscription, there are no end to the images that are available.
I did the same thing with the number 3!! 
 The papers I used are from the paper pack Brushed from Close To My Heart  . This is such a lovely paper pack, so colorful and spring like. I had already used most of this paper, and so this card was made with bits and pieces of left overs. I hope inspires you to join the fun ,and to use up all your little bits and pieces. Sunshine

The time is flying by. Although this winter seems like it will never end, spring is just around the corner. We will soon be growling about black flies and spring rain. Speaking of the time flying, I cannot believe my first grandchild is turning 17 today. It seems like only yesterday we held her in our arms for the first time, and were amazed at how beautiful and perfect she was. Seventeen yrs later and she is still beautiful and perfect. I am so proud of the amazing young woman she has become. The sketch this week from Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge     was an easy one , and I used it to make the card for my grand daughter.

I used the paper pack "Brushed" from Close To My Heart for this card. I love the color combination of the pinks, and lagoon and cranberry red in it. It is bright and cheery . The floral paper that is included is so springy and fresh, but was a little too busy with what I wanted, so I just flipped it over and used the other side. The lagoon card stock set everything off nicely. The design for the sentiment was cut using Spellbinders Resplendent Rectangles and my Big Kick . The sentiment I used is from the stamp set "Give A Lift" also from Close To My Heart, stamped with Cranberry Ink. The darling little flower is the metal embellishments from the Brushed collection. I  had some bling that matched the center of the flower, so placed 3 of them in the bottom right hand corner  to pull it all together. I never  worry about weather or not she will like what I make her. She loves everything I make her, and looks forward more to the cards then  her present.......LOL. Sketch 95

The weather today is ferocious. It is quite a blizzard. A perfect day to hunker down and play in the craft room. I decided to work on my card and blog for this weeks Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge .

I recently acquired a large lot of scrap booking/ card making supplies from my sister. My plan was to sell most of it off for her, but what a blast I have had going through everything. I am afraid that there is more possibility  of my keeping most of it then selling it........lol . Oh, this is going to cost me, I am sure. I digress, but who would not with all this fun stuff in front of them. 

Here is this weeks sketch (always awesome from the girls at AHSC).

Here is my take on it.

 This is not my usual style, but I so wanted to use some of the awesome retired CTMH paper packs that were included in my recently  acquired stash. I made this card for a very good friend. 

Many of my friends and family were here for me during the saddest and most difficult time of my adult life. The friend I made this for however was there for me day and night, and many long hours, after every one else had returned to their every day lives. She calls me daily, and checks on me often. Makes sure I am coping not only with my loss, but with the day to day chores and all the things that need to be done. Makes sure that I am eating properly and that I am getting back at doing the things I love.
As soon as I saw the verse that was tucked away in the pkg with the lovely paper, I knew I had to use it to make a birthday card for her.  She is truly an angel and this simple card can never tell her how much her friendship means to me. I only hope that she knows how much I treasure it.
I do hope that you all have a friend like this that you can count on. Have a great week and don't forget to use up all your little bits and pieces. (especially the ones that you get from someone else. They are they most fun!)

Friend

Wow, sketch # 94. It seems like a lifetime ago since I participated in the Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge . I have been away from my crafting  since the end of Sept . It has taken me a great deal of effort to get back at it . My heart is not in it since the loss of my husband of 42 years. I hope that I have done this challenge justice . Maybe I need to shake things up a little and try changing my style. I will try that next time around. For now , here is my card for this week. I made it for a very good friend who is having a birthday in March.

The paper pack I used is Heartstrings . A gorgeous paper from the mini cattie from Close To My Heart . This mini cattie runs out the end of March 2015, so  make sure you check it out and get your order placed soon. The rose,leaves, and swirls are  cut from Art Philosophy Cartridge also from CTMH . Celebrate Sister

Sketch # 73 this week at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge, was a pretty simple one.

Lots of ideas went though my head. I usually think about who I need a card for  in the next few weeks, and I have two sisters and a grand daughter who fit the bill. My oldest sister's was first, so I set out to find paper suitable for her. When perusing through my paper packs, my eyes hit on "Confetti Wishes' from Close To My Heart. Now, I do have to admit, when I  first  got this paper pack, I was not all the carzy about it, but I always order one pack of every new paper , so my customers can see first hand what it looks like. 
This paper pack, though not for me, is perfect for my sister, who loves yellow, and purples, and bright colors. 
It really came togther nicely, and I have a new fondness for it !! What a great combo of prints and plains, not only for making cards with, but it would make an awesome page, when scrapbooking a special birthdday party.

I love the new canary yellow and thistle card stocks, both included in this paper pack. I used the damask embossing folder from CTMH to emboss the background. I used the Cricut to cut out everything except the card itself !! The nice thing about the Cricut Explore, is, you can set you card up right on the virtual mat, and make sure everything is going to fit where you want it !! How awesome is that. Once you have it all organized, just hit the go button and you are off.

Our Deepest Sympathy

Sketch # 71 over at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge was a fairly easy design and should not have given anyone a problem to do, but my brian is just not working well these days.I needed a card for a neighbour who recently lost her wonderful husband, and although this sketch does not appear to be one you could turn into a sympathy card, anything is possible when you  need a card in a hurry.

I wanted to keep the colors and the design very neutral given the type of card it is.Other than the base card( 5 x 7), everything came out of my scrap paper bin. The background color is Arianna Green, the dark is Chocolate, and the print is also from the Ariana paper pack(retired) from   Close to My Heart   . The Colonial White cardstock was run through the  Big Kick with a soft design that I always feel looks serene and suitable for this kind of card. I inked everything with Chocolate. The sentiment was computer generated, and I finshed it off with three antique gold Durables, also left overs.

Even though this type of card is difficult to do, especially for a freind or neighbour, when you have a great sketch to inspire you, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.

Seahorse and Kelp

This weeks sketch over at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge , almost did not happen for me. It has been a very trying and hectic two weeks, and I was not sure I was going to find any time to do this. There are two big reasons I finally managed to "git'er done". First, I am not the kind of person who would not try her best to make sure she honors her commitments , and second , no matter how stressful life is, we all need a little me time. My "me" time is in my craft room , working. That is what makes me happy and relaxes me. I really needed that today.
Time constraints are going to make this little blog much shorter than normal. Most of you who follow me, know that I use 90% CTMH products, and this new Seaside PaperPack that I used, is going to be one of my faves this year. Though flowers, per the sketch, are usually by far my favorite thing to do, I am I little beach crazy lately. Hope you like my take on this weeks sketch . I promise to give you more next time. Till then, don't forget to make good use of all your little bits and pieces.

Christmas Gift Box

 

This little box is super easy to make. I used the new paper pack Yueltide Carol from Close To My Heart.You could use whatever paper stirkes you fancy , of course. 

You will need: 1- 12 x 12 sheet of plain cardstock 

                      1-print paper cut to 8 1/8 inches  x 8 1/8 inches

                      1- coordinating print paper cut at 5 7/8 inches x 5 7/8 inches

                          to line the bottom of the box, and give it a little more stability

The poinsettia is cut with Ruby red cardstock. This was made using a Spellbinder diecut. If you do not have this, there are lots of them on many of the Cricut Cartridges . The leaves are cut from New England Ivy. The box bottom is champagne, as is the tag. The tag is mounted on New England Ivy.The stamp is from the Yueltide Carol Scrapbooking Workshop, and is stamped using Ruby. The bling is also from the same WOTG, from Close To MY Heart.

The daisy like flower is white, and the edges were inked with Pear. The middle is Creme Brulee.

I made these darling little flowers from a tutorial by Cathy Derouche.  Click on her name to view tutorial.She does such a good job, there is no need for me to do it again.

So, all that is left, is constructing the box. Score the box bottom on all four sides at 3 inches. Using siccors, cut top and bottom lines to make tabs,  into where the fold lines meet.DO NOT cut side fold lines . I then cut small wedges from the inside of each corner tab. Fold in, and glue.(see diagrams)

Score the box top on all four sides at 1 inch. Follow the same procedure as above.

Decorate as desired

 4. fold tabs in and glue

 5. Glue coordinating carstock
in bottom on box.

Seashells

When I saw this weeks sketch at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.So I set forth to accomplish it. Well, I want you to know that I learned this week, that there are some things better left to others with more computer expertise then me. I will share the sketch and my take on this design, and explain what went into making this card !

 

I saw this sketch and knew I wanted to use the new stamp set Treasured Memories and paper pack Seaside just released in the brand new Close To My Heart annual idea book. Easy right??  Not !  I got it in my head that I was going to learn how to take my stamps and turn them into an SVG file to cut with my Explore, then I would not have to fussy cut around each stamped image to get the look that I wanted. Ha! That was easier said then done. After spending an entire afternoon following a couple of tutorials, and trying to follow the instructions of a colleague, I came to the conculsion that the old adage "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" was indeed correct. Having endured several unsuccessful attemps, I relied on said friend to help me out, and make the files for me. I will forever be in her debt. If I ever have the good fortune to visit her, she will be teaching me how to do this !! In any case she quickly did I what I had tried so hard to do, sent me the files, and I was able to muddle my way through from there.

 I cut these beautiful shapes to match one of the shells from this new stamp set. I stamped directly on the shape with memento black ink(would have preferred brown, but had none). I then colored the image with ShinHan Touch Twin Markers , new in the CTMH idea book this year. They are fabulous!  I am not a lover of colouring with makers, however these markers are truly wonderful. They colour with such smoothness and little effort. 

Each shell was first coloured with Clay(BR116). then again , just in spots to give an uneven look, using the blending marker to soften it out. I used Mahogany(BR96) to color the inner part of the shell, and then darkened the  shadows with Bronze(BR99). This was my first  time, and they came out not so bad, I think. 

I really like the way this card came together, even though I had to call on my friend to get me where I wanted to go. 

I hope you get a chance to step outside your comfort zone and try something new(with more luck then I ), and that you remember to use up all your little bits and pieces !!

Masculine Nautical Card

Well, sketch # 65 over at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge did not give me any problems at the time, but my own carelessness did. I had this post all done and linked. I was working on a different project, was not happy with what I had written, so I deleted it..................well, I thought I did. Turns out I deleted the post for sketch #65 !! Some days are trying, that is all I am going to say about that!! So here we go again, but I am sorry to say that because of time restraints this week, this will be a short blog.

This is my take on this sketch:

I love nautical cards, and since I needed a masculine card this month, I went with it. The stamp is one I have had for a very long time, and have no idea from whence it came. LOL ( not unusal for me) The cardstock is Outdoor denim from Close To My Heart, as well as the chevron ribbon. I love the blue and white together. The sentiment was computer generated, then I just cut the cardtock with my oval cutter with a background to mount it on. Layered them and cut about 2/3 of the oval away and tucked it under the ribbon.

Lace and Flowers

This week's sketch over at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge brought a smile to my face. I have a certain style that I love, and you know it always involves flowers and lace. I am never happier than when I can use those two things together.

This sketch was so my "cup of tea", that I had to go back to the basics and do what I love the most. I hope you like it !

This card is a 5 x7 on Colonial White cardstock. The background color and the color of the rose is Sorbert from CTMH. Mums are daisy white, inked with pear, and the centers are creme brulee. I cut the rose using the Art Philosophy cart from CTMH, and the mums and the centres from the Artiste Cart, also from CTMH. ( There is a new cart coming in Aug !, can't wait for that one !!). The leaves and the scrolls were also cut from Art Philosophy. The sentiment was computer generated and the lace and ribbon from my ever growing stash !! As I  alsways have flowers done up ahead of time, this card took only minutes to put together. I like to cut out the flower pieces when I have free time during the day,  or if I have an order for a specific color, I always cut a sheet full to have extra. I  them put them together in the evening, while spending time in front of the TV with hubby. That way I get to do what I want, and he doesn't feel like I am spending all my time in my craft room. With several birthdays coming in July and Aug, I am sure to be able to find just the right person for this card.

Welcome Baby # 7

When I looked at the sketch this week at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge , my first thought, was "oh, flowers". This will be easy peasy for me. As any one who knows me, knows of my love for flowers on everything............LOL. That being said, I also always try to make a card that I need in the forseeable future. That is  a baby shower card, hmmm, not really conducive to flowers.Well I forged ahead and made a card that I think follows the sketch (somewhat) and fills my needs as well. A  card for grandbaby number seven arriving this fall. 

 This new grandbaby, is also baby girl # 6, so I went with pinks and yellows and greens. It will match her little blankie that nana is making her.

The cardstock is from Close To My Heart , and  colours are as follows: Blush, Buttercup, Sweet Leaf, and White Daisy. The white background was embossed with the Quaterfoil embossing folder, also from CTMH. It has fast become one of my favorites. I used the "write" feature on my new Cricut Explore to do the writing on white,with metallic pink, then cut the same words out on the yellow to get the three demensional look. I layered the yellow over the white then both of these over sweet leaf. I inked all of the cuts on this card to make everything pop. The lace and ribbon are from  my never ending stash. this card is a labour of love, and I hope it inspires you to join the fun. As you can see, you don't have to take every sketch literally ( I rarely do) to make it work. Enjoy your week,and don't forget to use up all your little bits and pieces!!

Birthday Swirl

I loved this weeks sketch at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge . It just said, this is your cup of tea Barbara, so away I went. The card I made is for one of my pseudo daughter-in-laws,  both of whom I love dearly . It literally took me minutes to pull it together, using one of my favorites paper packs this season, Ariana, from Close To My Heart . The most difficult part of this card was trying to find enough scraps to use. I have purchased a lot of this paper, and have not used it sparingly.

Sketch # 59

My take on this weeks sketch.

The lace came from my stash, as did the blue ribbon. The beautiful swirls, do not show up well in the pic, but they are from CTMH, and really dress up your work. The sentiment was computer generated and cut with a spell binder die cut called Beaded Ovals.

Soccer ! Soccer !

Upon seeing sketch # 57 from Altantic Hearts Sketch Challenge , I knew immediately what I wanted to do. I have a grand daughter who is having a birthday in June, and she and her sisters are into soccer. They have been playing since before they started school. A few minor adjustments to the sketch, and voila, done !!

Quick and easy, and I know Erika will love this!! The soccer balls were cut from the cartridge "Life's a Party, and popped up with dimensionals .The wonderful hexagon paper is one from the Fundamentals Basic Assortment Paper , new to Close To My Heart this season. This wonderful paper pack offers 20(yes 20!!) double-sided 12" x12" sheets(2 each of 10 designs),same design on both sides.One side with matt finish and one side with glossy resist pattern, for only $19.95.
 I matted it with black, tied some black and grey bakers twine, a few black pearls and done. Who says you can't do a great looking card in no time !! That is what I have this week........no time!! Getting ready to go out west to see my grand babies and meet new baby when she arrives.

Apple Blossom Time

Spring in Nova Scotia always brings the most beautiful show of apple blossoms. Going to the apple blossom festival in the Annapolis Valley is a memory that most of us have grown up with. The beauty and frangrance is usually among the first spring joys we await.
 I recently had a friend ( whom I have only met on line and spoke to on the phone), give of her time and product freely , to help towards making our local crop a great day. Thank you Darla. Your tea was enjoyed by all!!
I decided that I would make her a thank you card, based on this weeks sketch at Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge , and choose apple blossoms to evoke fond memories .

I only took a few liberties with this sketch, by changing the direction of the ribbon, and my matting behind the first layer. 

The card stock color is Blush and White Daisy, from Close To My Heart . The flowers, and the sentiment were cut from the Art Philosophy cartridge.I used the chevron folder(new this year from CTMH) to emboss my paper, and the green narrow chevron ribbon(also from CTMH) to tie in the embossing design as well as the green of the branch . The thank you sentiment was written  using  a metallic marker and the new Cricut Explore. It cut out the design and wrote it all at the same time. If you have not seen this new machine in action, you need to google it and have a look. It is by far the best Cricut machine on the market.I could not cut the centers small enough for these tiny flowers, so I used white itty bitty pearls from CTMH, and them inked them with Buttercup, just to give them a slightly more realistic look. Each flower is inked with Blush, the petals curled with a flower tool, and then popped up to give dimension.

In Honour

We lost a friend and fellow crafter this week, and I was not going to do my post. However,  I could not sleep last night and kept thinking how courageous she was and how she never  gave up over her two and half year battle with pancreatic cancer. She loved making cards, and did so even when she was not feeling her best. It made me get out of bed and do this week's challenge for her.
